Tirupur Industry

Popularly known as "T-Shirt City" of the country, Tirupur is located 60kms from Coimbatore, Tamilnadu. It has come a long way from being a small cotton-marketing centre with a few ginning factories to become a prominent cluster of small and medium scale manufacturing enterprises gainfully engaged in the production export of a range of knitted apparels. The city's rapid growth can be attributed to the growth of textile industry and vice-versa.

Textile industry is one of the main pillars supporting the Indian economy. It constitutes about 14% of industrial production, 20% of total export earnings, 4% of GDP and provides direct employment to an estimated 35 million people. In spite of these, India's entire share in world textiles trade is still struggling at around 3%.

About 45% of Indian garment exports are in the form of knitwear, and in this, Tirupur plays a pivotal role, generating as much as 90% of the knitted garment exports, in other words, about 4% of India's total export trade.

TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN TIRUPUR :

Tirupur cluster comprises of around 5,000 units which are involved in one or the other activity of textile value chain. There is no precise data available as to the exact number of units in the different areas of the value chain. However, the growth of garment industry as a whole can be traced to the specialization of different activities upto the stage of garmenting in Tirupur. Such specialization has given Tirupur textile industry the required cost advantage to complete in the international markets.

TEXTILE SCREEN PRINTING MARKET IN TIRUPUR :

Exports of textiles from Tirupur during the year 2004 touched more than Rs.5,000 crores, contributing to almost 80% of of country's exports in the sector and it is expected to rise up to Rs.10,000 crores in the near future. Textile screen printing is playing a very important part in exports of knits and garments.

THE CLIMATE :

Tirupur has a tropical climate with little diffence in temperature in summer and winter. April and may are the hottest months with the mercury often soaring above the 40 c mark. The nights are usually cool.

INFRASTRUCTURE :

Infrastructure has played a pivotal role in the development of textile industry in Tirupur. Though it is still suffering from infrastructure bottlenecks, still a good amount of development has taken place in Tirupur town.

The city is well connected by air, road and railway (Tirupur station) and has very good hotel accommodation facilities with reasonable charges. As it is one of the important export centers in Southern India, regular exhibitions, conventions and conferences (national and international) are taking place in the city.

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has a full-fledged office in Tirupur, which looks after quota-administration in the MFA era. National  Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) has established its centre to provide training in the area of fashion, designs skills etc.,

THE INDUSTRY AROUND TIRUPUR :

Though Tirupur and its growth is unique in itself, there are quite a few industries in and around Tirupur. The neighboring city of Coimbatore is known for machine tools, pumps, yarn and fabrics. Nearby districts of Karur and Erode are known for bed sheets, curtain cloth, mosquito nets and other made-up items. Karur district also has lots of processing units for natural dyeing. The nearby areas of Tirupur like Somanur, Avinashi, Palladam and Koduvai are also actively involved in textile industry.

GROWTH OF TIRUPUR :

Buyers from 35 countries frequently visit Tirupur. For a hub, Tirupur can deliver customized samples in less than 12 hours; half a million pieces in a matter of days. It is no wonder then that more than 56% of India's total knitwear exports come from Tirupur. This has been recognized in the export import policy 2002-07 of Government of India which conferred the status of "Town of Export Excellence" to Tirupur. The rich availability of raw materials, and its close proximity to coimbatore, which is a major centre of cotton spinning industry in the country, provides Tirupur abundant and timely access to its basic raw materials. The strong entrepreneurial skills and personalized management contributes to efficient management of negotiations and direct control of operations causing cost effective competitiveness in the industry; quick and quality products add another dimension to Tirupur's prowess as a centre of outsourcing quality products.

INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT :

Tirupur is home to many industry associations, which in their own individual ways contribute to the growth of the industry. One such leading organization is Tirupur Export Knit Printers Association (TEKPA).
